1861 Turner Army Index

Roger E Nixon, Military & Historical Searches

The 1861 British Census contains details of British of soldiers serving at home but not those serving abroad who were spread across the globe in numbers large and small.

The 1861 Turner Army Index was created by Frank Turner in the 1980s. The indexation entailed the extraction of some 245,000 soldiers listed in the WO 10 (Royal Artillery), WO 11 (Royal Engineers) and WO 12 (Cavalry, Guards, Infantry and other units) series War Office Paylists in the March-June Quarter of 1861. The index was acquired by Military and Historical Searches upon retirement of the compiler.

Any genealogist or family historian who cannot find a male ancestor in the 1861 Census may find the 1861 Turner Army Index indispensible in locating a potential soldier

  • at some unexpected location in Great Britain and Ireland
  • anywhere else in the world

The index provides the names, ranks, army numbers and regiments of about 98% of other ranks subjects serving in the British Army. A small number, estimated at about 5000 men, are not included because the Paylists listing their names were lost: Mainly, but not only, Royal Artillery subjects.

A basic search is offered as are additional options

  • Check and supply of any specific name.
  • Location (where known) of any regiment in the March-June quarter 1861
  • Check of Crimea War (1854-56) casualties by name of soldier
  • Supply of specific British regiment locations worldwide approx. 1685-1886 - subject to available records

Once a soldier subject has been identified additional services can be provided to trace his origins and career if required.

  • Search for soldiers' papers (collection held at the National Archives covers 1760-1920) which will usually contain age and birthplace, personal facts and service details. Note: next of kin usually only after 1883.

or where papers have not survived -

  • Search of War Office Paylists up to 1877 (collection held at at the National Archives) to discover birthplace, former occupation, original date of enlistment, date, place and reason for discharge.
In some instances other records might also be researched subject to year and availability

NB: Other ranks British Army papers filed up to 1882 are only for men who went to pension. British Army commissioned officers are not included in the 1861 Turner Army Index.

A comprehensive appraisal will be provided subject to individual subject and requirements. No charge is made for this.
