As we move further into the new millennium, the pace and scope of research will reach unprecedented levels. New information sources, public databases and co-operation within the worldwide archival community are becoming ever more interactive aided greatly by improved communications, such as the Internet. Consequently, the need for increased diligence and care in historical research becomes paramount, and an understanding of the way sources interlink, or could potentially be used, are essential skills. When research becomes complex and time-consuming, many people will consequently turn to professionals to undertake the work for them. In these instances, exchanges between two parties must necessarily be governed by terms and conditions. Terms and Conditions have been prepared to guide and protect both the client and the researcher and, along with the Code of Conduct, have been formulated in clear understandable language to manage such working arrangements. Even since the construction of this website just a few years ago, we have seen the introduction of the online 1901 UK census in 2002. More recently, the electronic catalogues of all UK record offices have also gone online and a massive operation to electronically log the location of all deposited records continues in the United Kingdom. Alongside this all censuses from 1841 to 1901 are now online with fully searchable surname indexes: A major achievement not possible a decade ago, or maybe even five years ago. There is no doubt that the coming decade will deliver even more archival surprises.
