For people trying to discover their family genealogy, The National Archives UK (PRO) and other London repositories offer extensive diversity in genealogical and historical records. TNA alone has several hundred thousand military and naval records of genealogical significance. This includes indexed and unindexed records of births, marriages and deaths of army people at home and abroad, from 1761 and 1796 respectively.

TNA is not really the place to start family history research although it is an fantastic mine of information for genealogists who seek to build on existing knowledge of their ancestors' lives and occupations. There are a number of very specific areas that can be consulted sometimes with quite amazing results. Here are a few examples of the records available:
